Private tutor in Plano, TX

Education

MA Arts and Humanities, Specialization in Literature, from the University of Texas at Dallas 2012 BS Business Administration, minor in Creative Writing, from the University of Texas at Dallas 2004

Experience

I'm currently a professor at Richland College. I teach Composition 1301 and 1302 as well as English 2311, Business and Technical Communication. I've tutored privately for 6 years and for Richland for the past 4 years. I've developed teaching and tutoring techniques that focus on adapting to the individual way each unique student learns best. I have a patient, nurturing tutoring and teaching style, which works well particularly when a student has low confidence about a subject. I see this in many of my composition students; they feel that they are incapable of learning to write well and want to give up rather than putting in effort. My first tactic is to rebuild confidence and teach students a growth mindset- anyone is capable of improving in any subject if he/she is willing to work hard at it. My other credentials include being a published fiction writer, being the former Editor-in-Chief of the literary journal Reunion:The Dallas Review, and being the former Fiction Editor for the literary journal Sojourn. Prior to obtaining my MA, I worked in the mortgage industry, where I gained practical math experience. Additionally, I took advanced math classes during my undergraduate study to obtain my BS. While I am decidedly a right-brained person, many of the students I've tutored for the SAT have appreciated my ability to teach them math concepts in a more approachable way than a left-brained (or math-minded) tutor/teacher might. My main objective is for all of my students to attain the highest level of success possible. I develop very close working relationships with my students, and feel very strongly that their wins are my wins. To this end, if one method of approaching a subject doesn't work, I will keep looking until I find another that does. Hobbies

My main hobby and passion is fiction writing and reading. I write stories that usually reflect on my own reality, from my experiences as a college student in TX during my early writing career, to the novel I'm currently writing about motherhood and the history of my family who immigrated from Italy 3 generations ago. I love to read both contemporary and classic fiction. My favorite classic author (though it's difficult to choose!) is Edgar Allen Poe. My favorite contemporary author is Margaret Atwood. I've also recently started reading Game of Thrones. I'm an avid knitter and crocheter as well. I used to enjoy playing video games, though once I had my daughter (who is now 5), I had much less time to play them. I stay informed about the most popular games out through my husband and my students. I'm a former competitive swimmer, and while my racing days are over, I still love to workout in the pool. I dabble in playing the ukelele and singing karaoke. My other interests are whatever my daughter is interested in at the moment. I love seeing her grow and develop new passions, and I do everything I can to foster her wonder and joy in the world.
